First woman President of UK university

Nirmalya Roy from Kerala pursuing Ship Science course in the University of Southampton UK became its first female president. The science involved building and designing a ship.It was her dream to become its president. There was a two week campaign in April,after which online voting was held and Nirmalya won hands down.Her future proposals include increased communication between faculty and students and setting up international conferences to broaden the minds of students.


Nirmalya and her twin Nivedya are the only two Indians in their class. When asked why they chose an off beat course like ship science, pat came the reply that the interest ran in their blood, that their father and uncle were naval architects.
Her future plans are to graduate, then work in a firm for a few years and finally join her dad’s business.
