First woman in the civil service dies

The first woman IAS officer Anna Rajam Malhotra died in Mumbai at the age of 91. She was born in Kerala and moved to Chennai to pursue her studies in the Madras University. She was married to R.N.Malhotra who was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1985 to 1990. Anna joined the civil services in 1951 and opted for the Madras cadre.

Her first posting was in Hosur as a Sub Collector.. She served under seven Chief Ministers and had the privilege to accompany former Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi on an eight nation tour when she was in the personnel section of the Union Home Ministry. When she joined service, the rules were that she would be terminated when she got married. However, fortunately for her, the rules were amended
