A woman doctor is guilty of having performed more than a 1000 female foeticides in the temple town of Tiruvannamalai. This could be the biggest public health scam in recent times. Dr.Selvambal who was running the clinic with an attached scan centre has gone underground following the probe.
Despite the government’s efforts to educate people on the virtues of having a girl child and stringent punishment for those indulging in female foeticide, this has been happening on a massive scale.The government is visibly upset over the issue and has conducted several raids in clinics and scan centres. The district collector has sealed the clinic and is conducting intensive campaigns across the district to educate people against female foeticide and also against going to quacks.
