Oil companies have clarified that there is no expiry date for LPG cylinders, that only the due date for mandatory tests are printed on them. A cylinder has a life time of 15 years and mandatory tests are conducted twice during this period. The cylinder is checked for leaks with a hydro test where water is filled and a pneumatic test where five times the pressure than what is usually stored is applied.

If a cylinder fails in either of these tests,it is discarded. Every day 1/25% of the total cylinders in use are pulled out for these tests and few of them are scrapped. Consumers are worried that if a date barred cylinder is supplied to them,it might explode. However officials said that consumers need not panic. All they have to do is to call their agency and report and the needful would be done.
