Former CIA agent Tony Mendez, whose life had inspired Academy Award winning Hollywood movie Argo, died due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease. He was 78. Mendez had helped to smuggle six US diplomats out of Iran on January 27, 1980.

Actor Ben Affleck who portrayed Mendez in the movie said, “Tony Mendez was a true American hero. He was a man of extraordinary grace, decency, humility and kindness. He never sought the spotlight for his actions, he merely sought to serve his country. I’m so proud to have worked for him and to have told one of his stories.”

Argo bagged three Oscars in 2013 including for best motion picture.
