US officials resorted to DNA testing on 3000 detained children who were separated from their migrant parents. These controversial procedures are part of the government efforts to meet the deadline imposed by the court to reunite children with their parents.

The Department of  Health and Human Services are conducting the tests through harmless cheek swabs. This is normally used as a last resort means of identification if birth certificates and other documents are not available. Currently about 11,800 minors are in US custody after crossing over from Mexico. The Secretary of the Health and Human Services said that the authorities are working to reunite children with their parents as expeditiously as possible.
