Differently abled women more prone to sexual harassment

An NGO in Kolkata working for the rights of the disabled has found that more than 100 disabled girls and women have raised allegations of sexual harassment. Shampa Sengupta, Director of Sruti Rights Disability Centre said that the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, prescribed a stricter punishment for harassing persons with disabilities.

Under the new laws, an assault on a disabled girl or woman would be considered to be an “aggravated assault” and would be punished with a stricter punishment. Hundreds of differently abled people took out a rally on the event of the International Day for Disabled Persons and met the Disability Commissioner.
