Although Angana was born in Kolkata, she completed her schooling in Delhi and moved to Bengaluru. A post graduate in Finance and HR, she was working with HP when she got her first film offer. “I started modelling from a young age and did a lot of commercials and fashion shows for top brands. I had the opportunity to work in a Tamil commercial with renowned cinematographer, Ravi K Chandran, which became very popular! That’s how I got noticed by Kollywood and ‘Vathikuchi’ happened,” she recalls. What was perceived as a good ‘break’ from modelling turned out to be the stepping stone in her career! Angana believes that it is destiny that has brought her this far.

She has been hopping from one state to the next but how did she handle so many languages? “I never really felt that language was a barrier, probably because I enjoy learning new languages. I am well versed in seven languages and in South India, Malayalam is probably the only language that I don’t speak but I understand it well. In fact, am not sure why but a lot of people ask me if I am a Malayali,” she smiles.

New Learnings

Her journey thus far has had its fair share of challenges. “I must say that being an actor is definitely not easy. It gets very tedious sometimes with long and odd working hours. At the same time, I thoroughly enjoy every bit of it as I am very passionate about movies. The biggest challenge however, is understanding the mind-set of the people…The film industry is not an organised sector and there is no governing body to oversee or address grievances related to our profession. Having such an organisation would definitely be a welcome change,” she says.

Her biggest strength would be her simplicity and the fact that she is able to ‘be herself’ without really being affected by the ‘actress’ tag that comes with her profession. She believes in being open and upfront about her feelings and opinions and that, probably, is also her weakness. “I am very frank about my thoughts and opinions and I expect the same from others. But that can get me into trouble sometimes,” she laughs.

On Screen

‘Instinctive’ is how she describes the actress in her. “It’s good to be inspired by similar characters but I feel one needs to be ‘original’ to do justice to the character you are portraying.” She debuted in Tollywood in a cameo role with Mahesh Babu and Shruti Hassan in ‘Srimanthudu’. This was immediately followed by her first lead role in ‘Sri Sri’, which also happens to be the most memorable character she has played till date. “In Sri Sri, I am playing the role of a fierce journalist fighting against corruption with Superstar Krishna and renowned star Vijayanirmala, playing the part of my parents. The movie scores high on emotions and drama and it was a fantastic learning experience for me! Dream roles? “The role played by Jyothika in ‘Mozhi’ and Shobana maam’s ‘Manichitrathazhu’”

Being Angana…

‘Me’ Time? “Listening to music and making butter popcorn!” comes the quick response. A trained classical singer, Angana says if she were not an actor, she would definitely have chosen a career in music. Even now, if she is offered play back singing, she says she would be more than happy to take it. Though she is not associated with any NGO, Angana is active in social service. When she is not shooting, she tries to spend time at the orphanage with the children. “Music and children are my biggest source of rejuvenation after a tiresome work schedule,” she says.

She is excited about the release of her two new Tamil Projects in which she plays the lead, ‘Yezhu Natkal’ and ‘Kadasi Bench Karthik’. She also has a good mix of projects in her kitty which includes a Bollywood movie with Vidyut Jamwal, a Bengali film and a Marathi film with Shreyas Talpade. “I am clueless when it comes to Marathi but am sure it’s going to be another great learning experience!” she says.
