Ours is a patriarchal society and certain traditions like a father giving away his daughter in marriage and a son performing the last rites of his parents are strictly adhered to. Sampradaya is considered sacrosanct and people are not accustomed to break the religious system.

However there was a recent event where the mother  gave away her daughter in marriage. Even though there is no place in our sastras for women to perform kannigadhaanam, it is left to the individuals if they want to break the rules.Recently even a widow participated in a wedding ritual. Women have also started performing the last rites of their parents. This is a welcome trend in society and it is hoped that many more women come forward to finally put an end to all forms of gender discrimination.
