Criminal law amendment bill introduced

The Lok Sabha introduced a Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2018 that provides for death penalty for those convicted for raping girls below 12 years. The Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said that the recent incidents of rape and gangrape have shaken the entire nation, therefore the crime needed effective deterrence by providing more stringent punishment.

The recent brutal violence on minor girls has fuelled demands from society to make penal provisions stringent and to ensure speedy trials.Death penalty has been provided for rapists of girls under 12 years and the minimum punishment for rape of women has been increased from rigorous imprisonment of 7 years to 10 years extendable to life imprisonment. The minimum punishment for rape of girls under 16 has been increased from 10 years to 20 years extendable to imprisonment for the rest of life. Punishment for gangrape of a girl below 16 will be imprisonment for the rest of the life of the convicts.
