Creches at work places

The Centre has laid down guidelines for setting up creches at work places. The Parliament passed the Maternity Benefit Amendment Act, 2017 enhancing paid maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks. The law also makes it mandatory for organisations with 50 or more staff to have a creche. The creche could be situated either at the work place or within 500 metres. The creche is to be kept open for eight to ten hours and a minimum space of 10 to 12 sq feet per child and there should not be any unsafe places like drains, pits or garbage bins near the centre. The creche should have at least one guard who has undergone verification and a trained worker for every 10 children under 3 years of age.

There should be a monitoring committee to oversee the working of the creche.
