A medical officer attached to a Primary Health Centre at Uchipuli and a nurse left behind a  part of a broken needle after they completed an episiotomy procedure on a woman who delivered a baby. While the nurse had been suspended, departmental action has been ordered against the medical officer. Ramya, wife of a construction worker visited the Primary Health Centre on November 17th when she experienced labour pain.

She gave birth to a baby girl through normal delivery on November 19th. While closing the surgical cut with sutures, the nurses allegedly left behind a portion of the broken needle inside the woman’s body. Ramya complained of pain and bleeding and was referred to the Government Headquarters Hospital. When an X-ray was done, it revealed the broken needle in her body. It was then removed after a 2 hour surgical procedure. Her family members and local residents staged a protest outside the Primary Health Centre alleging deleriction of duty on the part of doctors and nurses. Ramya is now stable.
