British teacher wins award

Andria Zafirakou who works as a teacher in a British school in one of the poorest areas won the Global Teacher Prize of $1 million equal to Rs 6.5 crore. She was an arts and textiles teacher from the Alperton Community College of Brent.

There were thirty thousand candidates in the running. British Prime Minister Theresa May and Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid were among the first to congratulate her. The Dubai based Varkey foundation organized the event and it is the fourth time it has handed out the prize for best teacher. The prize money of $1 million would be paid in 10 equal instalments over 10 years on a condition that the teacher continues teaching for at least five years.
