The Chennai Corporation in a tie up with The Akshaya Patra Foundation has announced that breakfast would be provided for about 5000 students of Corporation Schools in the city. It was found that many students used to skip breakfast for various reasons. Providing free breakfast to school students was an idea thought of by former Chief Minister Jayalalitha way back in the year 2006. However the idea could not be implemented for certain reasons.
This plan will be highly beneficial to various students who come to school on an empty stomach. The menu includes idli, pongal, upma  and kichidi. The estimated cost per meal is Rs 12.50. The meals are cooked in the central kitchen of the Foundation and are delivered to the schools at least half an.hour before the school opens. The feedback received so far is very promising and plans are on to cover more schools.
