In a bid to promote gender equality, a village named Haridaspur in Kondapur mandal of Telangana has taken an initiative to encourage parents who give birth to a girl child. Between December 2019 and January 2020, three girls were born in the village.
To celebrate the arrival of the newborns, the Panchayat building was illuminated with colourful lights. The parents were invited to the function and were handed over 5 postdated cheques for Rs 200/ each. This was done because of the low sex ratio of girls as there were only 880 females for every 1000 males. The village agreed to financially help the girls to complete their education and also help with the marriage expenses. They inaugurated a special scheme “Sukanya Samruddi Yojana” and motivated parents to enrol their daughters for the scheme.
