Anna Burns wind Booker Prize for fiction

Anna Burns is the first Northern Irish writer to win the prestigious Man Booker Prize for her fictional book ‘Milkman’. The book is a vibrant and violent story set during Northern Ireland’s years of Catholic-Protestant violence. The 56 year old novelist was stunned when she was announced the winner.

She received 50,000 pounds as prize money. The Duchess of Cornwall handed over the trophy to her during a ceremony at London’s Guildhall.Anna said that her books took a long time to complete and that she often struggled financially. Her first novel ‘No bones’ released in 2001. Thie novel ‘Milkman’ was set in the 1970’s but was published amidst the sexual harassment allegations that sparked the “MeToo” movement.
