The Mollywood actress is excited about her role as Captain Lakshmi Sehgal

Mrudula Murali is making her Bollywood debut through national award-winning director Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Raagdesh opposite Sonam Kapoor’s cousin, Mohit Marwah. Mrudula is playing the role of Captain Lakshmi Sehgal, who was an officer of the Indian National Army, and Minister of Women’s Affairs in the Azad Hind government.

Mrudula is on cloud nine to have bagged the role of Captain Lakshmi whom she says she has adored since her childhood. She also informs us that she has been reading Lakshmi’s biography to know more about the Captain. “I have been reading about her ever since I was chosen to play Dr Captain Lakshmi Sehgal’s books, biographies and everything related to her,” she says adding that bringing her alive on reel would be really challenging.

Raagdesh is a movie on the Indian National Army (INA) Trials of 1945. Colonel Prem Sehgal, Colonel Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon, and Major General Shah Nawaz Khan, officers in the British Indian Army were taken prisoners of war in Malaya, Singapore and Burma respectively, and were court-martialed in the capital. “As it’s a period film, I am also doing research on the pre-independent era in India. To get into the skin of the character, I am also planning to visit Captain Lakshmi’s ancestral house in Palakkad,” Mrudula says.

Mohit Marwah plays her counterpart Prem Sehgal in the film. “We have some challenging scenes together. The director had a clear picture of his characters. He groomed us well. He knew what he wanted,” says Mrudula, a self-confessed fan of Tigmanshu’s body of work.
