Elangbam Valentina Devi all of 9 years of Kakching district in Manipur has been appointed as the State’s green ambassador. A video of her shedding tears over two trees axed for a road widening project went viral. In less than a week, Manipur’s Director of Information and Public Relations, H. Balkrishna Singh made the appointment. She is now the brand ambassador for the Chief Minister’s Green Manipur Mission and all official tree plantation activities taken up in the State for a period of one year from the date of issue of the order.

She is a Class 5 student of Amutombi Divine Life English School in Kakching town. She had planted the saplings of two Gulmohar trees by the side of the river when she was in Class 1. She had been tending to them since then and they grew into healthy trees. When these two trees were axed for widening the road, a videographer filmed her crying as if someone from her family had passed away. Hearing this, the District Superintendent of Police met her and consoled her. He also gave her 20 saplings to be planted in a suitable place. Valentina will be provided honorarium at government rates, transportation facilities as well as food and lodging facilities at admissable rates by the sponsoring government department.
